It Snows in Jumbo

The bumper stickers are true, it does snow in Jumbo! Jumbo Pass, a place shrouded by much debate and controversy over a proposed development has long been a great early season destination for good skiing. This year proved to be even better than most. Having missed out on this early November extravaganza for a few years I was certainly stoked to hike my valley dwelling ass into the alpine to see what it would hold this year. Turned out to be great snow, excellent stability and a solid crew that made for one of the best Jumbo experiences I've had yet. Here is a video from our trip filmed November 12-15th, 2009...

We found what we believed to be a temperature crust above 2000m that was down about 70-80cms. We were unable to get any results on this layer in compression tests and ski cutting. We found no shears in the snow-pack that caused any concerns. We left at the start of the latest storm and soft slab was beginning to form from a cold west wind with some distribution on to lee features (E-NE aspects).
