Terminator 3 Avalanche

Posted on Saturday, January 23, 2010 by Registered CommenterShralp | Comments5 Comments
Scott Belton, of Adrenalin Descents, sent us this video filmed by one of his clients of Scott sawing off a cornice on Terminator 3 this week. The first chunk of cornice simply plowed down slope with no result. The second chunk initiated a size 3 avalanche 150m wide with an average depth of 40-80cms. The slab ripped fast and ran over 1200m to valley bottom. Scott figured that it was a wind slab, and not a result of the Dec. 29 surface hoar. Great example of why carrying a cord and taking the time to drop some weight on a slope prior to jumping in is a good practice.

The 3 people doing the slope test were very sure that there was no one down there as they had assessed that no one was ahead of them that morning.
Sounds like an excitable reaction based on the severity of the slide and seeing it up close.
