Well, after almost losing faith in old man winter, it came back with a vengeance. We got over 50cm of snow in the storm of the nice low density nature. The winds were in the moderate range from various directions - from the South, South East, West and North West. On the first day of the storm slabs were developing at ridgetop in the morning and by the end of the day slabs extended downslope. Friday night it continued to dump and there was an extensive natural avalanche cycle. Saturday brought clear skies and an awesome morning of avalanche control. We saw widespread size 3's and very wide propagations.

While heli-bombing just the bag hitting the slope was enough to trigger an avalanche - no detonation required - can you say super touchy? One shot that did go off on the East face of Terminator caused avalnches all the way out to T4. There were also reports of Skier-remotes on the Molars and Skier accidentals on the East trees of the Molars. As well, looking around, numerous sightings of natural avalanches in all directions. With the weak layers that are buried there is definately enough load on them to wreak some potential havoc. Today the freezing level is forecast to rise up to 2900m, which will cause additional stress to the snowpack. It is definately a time to choose terrain wisely and keep a good heads-up on the overhead hazard as well as potential cornice failures. Have fun, play safe, and let's hope we get another storm like the one just past.
