Return of the Dogtooth Dash
The Dogtooth Dash is the culmination of the biggest race season yet for Canada with an expanded 5 race calendar, 12 members of the National Skimo team competing in the world championships in Europe, unprecedented race entries and greater awareness of fast, light backcountry travel.
The course is one the most challenging Ski Mountaineering race courses in North America, utilizing all three alpine bowls, with technical boot packs / descents on each ridge line and a unique Le-Mans start. Skimountaineering races combine all elements of ski touring with athletes skiing, skinning and booting around a course mimicking the type of days a skimoutnaineer would typically have, but condensed into a 2 hour blitz.
The Dogtooth Dash race course is set entirely within the ski area boundary and will challenge athletes with about 5000 vertical feet of climbing / descending on the competitive course, and 2600 ft of climbing / descending on the rec course.
New this year for the Dash comes the introduction of a wide range of prizing categories:
• Two main course options
o Competitive (full course) and Recreational (poker run)
• Cash prizing for the fastest male and female racers of the day in the competitive course
• Masters prizing classes for racers 40+ and 50+
• The recreational class poker run with participants grabbing cards at transition stations
and playing the best hand for first grabs at prizes at the Eagle’s Eye après
• New junior class for youth 18 and under
o With free entry for the first 10 under 19 racers
o In partnership with backcountrysafety.com
Unsure of the benefits of skimo racing? Former national team members Greg Hill, Aaron Chance and Ptor Spricnicks, to mention a few have shown what’s possible when you blend light gear, super fitness and a new perspective on what’s possible in the mountains; Big peaks, aesthetic descents and MORE fun. Still unconvinced about these rando geeks in spandex and kids skis? Check out the Euros skiing Mt Blanc car-to-car in a little over 5 hrs, or the Haute route from Zermatt to Verbier in 6 hrs.
Come celebrate another winter in the bag and a great opportunity to connect with other people who share the passion for touring the great mountains we live in. To facilitate that we have a pre-race carbo loading pasta dinner the night before. and a post-race BBQ at Canada’s most elevated dining experience, the Eagle's Eye restaurant. That is not to mention all the amazing prizes from sponsors such as Rossi, Black Diamond, The North Face, Dynafit, Integral Designs, Suunto Kicking Horse Coffee and The Eagle's Eye. All that fun is included in your race fee so start egging on your friends about how you’re gonna whip their butts in the Dogtooth Dash, get out touring, set up a carpool, and be there for April 3rd. If racing’s not your thing we always need volunteers so if you want to help send me an e-mail at iangaleski@hotmail.com.
