August 3rd, 2010, Golden, BC…. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort announces today the opening of a 4th Alpine Bowl for its 10 year celebrations, winter 2010/11. Known by local mountain enthusiasts as ‘Super Bowl’, the terrain will introduce an epic selection of advanced and expert skiable terrain. “Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is excited to announce the addition of a 4th Alpine Bowl to its already impressive roster of terrain,” states Steve Paccagnan, President and CEO of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort “this opening is a perfect lead in to the 10 years of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort celebrations while continuing to demonstrate the resort commitment to improving the overall guest experience.” The terrain in Super Bowl has previously been referred to as some of the ‘best high alpine terrain found anywhere’. With over 15 new advanced and expert chutes, the entire bowl will have an off-piste feel within a controlled inbounds environment. Winter access to this terrain will be a unique experience with a new ski traverse trail from the top of the Golden Eagle Express Gondola. The main chutes will be accessible VIA two boot pack trails from the summits of Terminator and T2. Each hike is located in the hi-alpine and will be a must do for those seeking a true big mountain experience. Super Bowl is situated south of the existing Kicking Horse Mountain Resort ski area boundary and positioned within the original controlled recreational area. The bowl’s terrain is made up of North, South and East facing slopes with a ski out that exists at the top of the existing Terminator run. “Super Bowl has always been a part of the resort’s Controlled Recreation Area (CRA) and original master plan. However, the bowl has never been open and skiable terrain," says Steve Paccagnan, President and CEO. “The decision was made to open this new terrain and provide our valued guests with safe access to one of the best alpine ski/snowboard bowls and chutes in North America." The project also includes a new summer hiking trail along the Bowl Over ridge to the Super Bowl saddle. The highlight of this hiking trail is easy access to some amazing views of the Columbia Valley, Canyon Creek and stunning alpine meadows. The trail will also feature some alpine interpretive signage to help educate guests on alpine travel and the local topography. That's unfortunate. Now we'll have to wait until the resort opens it instead of it being our own call.

great now more inexperienced wannabes will get lost, hurt and endanger those that have always enjoyed this area. and i'm sure ticket and pass prices will increase. yay khmr!

wow. season passes are sooooo expensive. this mountain is so over priced. they better start handing out free joints and drinks, at the lift line. maybe they can build a new chair lift. and perhaps they will provide male and female escorts. because the season pass prices are outta this world. rich swedes will love it, and albertans

Hilarious how much negativity there is! So there is an entire range of backcountry options from khmr, not to mention endless expanse of peaks to explore....and many that will still exist within a short walk from the resort? Superbowl is skied so much it might as well be in bounds. Bunch of cry babies, sack up and hike a bit more for the goods, and get a job that pays so you can pay to play. Life is not cheap....shredding 4,000ft of vert over and over comes with a price tag that is still cheaper than most resorts. Quit whining.

Solid Shralp! I was trying to word a response and you nailed it.

Not complaining about price $612 is a great deal for what we get to shred! Every resort has it's quirks and perhaps the expanded terrain will bring increased clientele which may help fill the coffers for future expansion (i.e lifts). Just saying that instead of going in when we deem it to be an acceptable risk we will have to wait until patrol gives the thumbs up and drops the rope. Now to look at the positives for you shralp, more people south may mean less traffic north. Mind you past Ozone the cattle train disappears anyways. Maybe it's just me.... I've had enough of these mosquitoes, bring on the snow!

Not sure where these comments are headed? the post is about opening new terrain on a ski resort to the general public... It's great terrain that has always been skied extremely hard (often unsafely). it should be no surprise that this terrain is being opened and i see it making the skiing on the whole mountain that much better by spreading people out even more.

So

If you don't want to ski it...don't...
if you don't want to sled to ski...don't..
if you don't want to buy a ticket...don't..
and if all you want to do is bitch...DON'T.

Slap your skins on and head north...i'll see you out there.

it's about khmr charging more money for what was already skiable. like walmart less for more. put some more lifts in if you want to charge more. get it?

You don't have to pay it. Just don't go and I'm sure nobody will miss a juvenile whiner on the mountain. Get it? The rest of us will enjoy it.

No way of knowing who is whining about their personal playgrounds being trampled, but I'm guessing it is mostly people who moved here because the gondola made access so easy, and now want the world to become static so their happiness is everlasting. It's a resort. It expands. That's its nature. Golden voted voted over 90% in favour of welcoming the resort into town. Now live with it.

I'm not crying about my playground being trampled. Bring on the people who pay good money for their 'extreme' skiing vacation they can really shlarp it up. Superbowl has seen ample traffic that has been increasing over the past 5-7 years, let 'em have it. Solitude can still be found in our backyard with so many bc options. Easy gondy access to slackcountry is not why I moved here. I moved to Golden for all the luscious single ladies out here. Inbounds super bowl will become a way of life just as STD's and ski towns go hand and hand. It's got to be easier dealing with gaperville in Superbowl than it is itching, burning and squirming. Just give it time.

khmr must have spent so much to open super bowl. and now more permanent closure south to other terminators. open a little terrain and close a bunch.

KHMR has passed it's prime, sorry boys gone are the day's of endless powder and empty gondolas.I remember the beginning, wow those were the days. First 5 years at the horse was the best skiing in the world, now it's just too damm busy that is why I traded my season pass for a two stroke. I'll become a pass holder again if KHMR ever puts a road into Canyon Creek now that would make me come back, I hate the slugg that it is to get out of Canyon Creek makes for really long days.
