Hi Climbers and skiers,
A number of you may be familiar with the Catamount and North Star Glaciers (the Olive Hut is located by Catamount Glacier) and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts is reviewing the Section 105 closure to motorized vehicles (i.e. snowmobiles) for the Catamount and Northstar glaciers. The closure has been ineffective and the Ministry’s position is that it does not have the money or staffing to enforce the closure.

Importantly though, is that they are currently consulting stakeholders and would be interested in hearing comments from the climbing/skiing community. Please do so and also please circulate this email to others who may be interested.

Please seek additional information and/or direct your comments to Aina Cernenoks:

Today's forecast looks like a promising addition to the 9cm we received overnight. In the past few days we have seen very little in the way of cornice growth and slab development but we expect this to change with the continued snow, forecasted moderate to strong Southerly winds and high relative humidty. In recent shovel tests we are still getting moderate, sudden results within the upper 60cm's on various surface hoar layers. When the sun shines don't get complacent - think about what that heat is doing to the snowpack and overhead cornices.
It's gonna be a good day of skiing!

Golden Film Festival this Saturday!

A quick reminder to pick up your tickets for this weekends annual Golden Film Festival. We got over 50cm of snow in the storm of the nice low density nature. The winds were in the moderate range from various directions - from the South, South East, West and North West. On the first day of the storm slabs were developing at ridgetop in the morning and by the end of the day slabs extended downslope. Friday night it continued to dump and there was an extensive natural avalanche cycle. Saturday brought clear skies and an awesome morning of avalanche control. We saw widespread size 3's and very wide propagations. While heli-bombing just the bag hitting the slope was enough to trigger an avalanche - no detonation required - can you say super touchy? One shot that did go off on the East face of Terminator caused avalnches all the way out to T4. There were also reports of Skier-remotes on the Molars and Skier accidentals on the East trees of the Molars. As well, looking around, numerous sightings of natural avalanches in all directions. With the weak layers that are buried there is definately enough load on them to wreak some potential havoc. Today the freezing level is forecast to rise up to 2900m, which will cause additional stress to the snowpack. It is definately a time to choose terrain wisely and keep a good heads-up on the overhead hazard as well as potential cornice failures. Have fun, play safe, and let's hope we get another storm like the one just past.

Revy Disaster

Our condolences and thoughts go out to families and friends of the fatalities in Revy this weekend!
